Old Man of the Woods and a Few of his Rowdy Friends

Meet the Old Man of The Woods...He's a Fungi!

A mushroom is the fleshy, spore-bearing fruiting body of a fungus, typically produced above ground on soil or on its food source. Like all fungi, mushrooms are not plants and do not undergo photosynthesis.
  • The above images of mushrooms were taken at Hungry Mother State Park on the Molly's Knob hike (it is not for the faint hearted, but well worth the trip!)

If you know the name (scientific or common) of the other three mushrooms shared above, leave us a comment on this blog article. Let's test your knowledge!

As always BRFAL Chapter of Virginia Master Naturalist wants you get outside and see something new. Don't forget to look down, there is much life in the understory!
