Dr. Bob R. Pohlad is a retired Professor of Biology and Horticulture at Ferrum College and Professor Emeritus. He received his Master in Botany from the University of Central Florida and his PhD in Plant Pathology from the University of Georgia. Dr. Pohlad joined the faculty at Ferrum College in the fall of 1978 along with his late wife, Dr. Carolyn Thomas. He was program coordinator in Agriculture, Biology, and Horticulture at Ferrum College and started the 4-year Agriculture Science program in 1980.

Dr. Pohlad’s teaching interests focused mainly on plants and fungi whether it be in the agriculture, biology, or environmental science programs. He is a strong proponent of experiential learning and the use of technology in teaching. Dr. Pohlad’s research activities have centered on the study of fungi and algae in both terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems.

Dr. Pohlad is a senior scientist for the 34-year Water Quality Monitoring Program on Smith Mountain Lake that was co-founded and coordinated by Dr. Thomas, where he studies the yearly cycles of aquatic algae and invasive aquatic weeds. Both he and Dr. Thomas have published numerous articles and presented papers at numerous national meetings on their research and teaching.

Dr. Pohlad is a long time supporter of and presenter for BRFAL, sharing his expertise in new member Basic Education and continuing education.  During our next chapter meeting, 4/15/2021, at 7 pm via Zoom, Dr. Pohlad will deliver a presentation on the DeHart Botanical Gardens located in Patrick County (https://www.ferrum.edu/school-of-arts-and-sciences/projects/dehart-botanical-gardens/). He will discuss the history of this fascinating Ferrum College property and give an overview of the wildflowers and fungi along the trail in different seasons.
