Virginia State Parks Blog article - for all you young naturalists who want to dip your toe into aquatic life of a stream!
Project Fish Bugs comes to Grayson Highlands State Park
On July 10th, at Grayson Highlands State Park, Mouth of Wilson, VA, a group of young explorers, naturalists, and bug-lovers will explore the aquatic invertebrates of Wilson Creek through Project Fish Bugs, a special program that shows participants how to use nets, microscopes, Petri dishes, and identification charts to take a closer look at the rich aquatic life of their creek.
The program is being orchestrated by the Blue Ridge Discovery Center, an organization that finds creative ways to introduce young people to the diverse ecosystems of the Blue Ridge region through guided exploration and a scientific approach. For Grayson Highlands, the program is a unique way of exposing younger visitors to the natural treasures of the park. By equipping them with the tools and methods of a field researcher, the program aims to inspire them to ask questions about their surroundings and explore their state park in a new way.
Young people or parents who would like more information or are interested in signing up for the program can call the Grayson Highlands park office at (276) 579-7092 or e-mail Kelly Servick at kservick@gmail.com. More information about the mission and activities of the Blue Ridge Discovery Center can be found at their website.
