Giant Robber Flies!
I found these on the outside of my kitchen window this morning. Two gigantic insects, apparently mating, and one of them holding a bee. I went outside to get a better picture and they flew at my head, almost launching me off the deck. A bit of searching online…they appear to be a species of Giant Robber Fly, also called Bee Killers or Cannibal Flys. These were about 4 inches long each, from head to tip of tail. They prey on bees and other flying insects, and have been known to attack humming birds. Apparently they are also adept at multi-tasking.
