Mark your calendars now and plan to attend “Your Waterwise Landscape” a community education event from 1 to 4PM on Sunday, April 12 at the W.E. Skelton 4-H Center.
How Waterwise is your landscape?
Do you know how well your property slows and filters the rain water that runs over it toward the lake?
Did you know that good basic buffer landscaping practices not only help protect the water quality of Smith Mountain Lake, they can also increase your property value? Do you know how to attract wildlife like birds and butterflies, while discouraging geese and deer? If you would like to learn how to answer these questions and more as well as becoming a good steward of SML water quality, we have an opportunity for you!
At this event you will hear from experts on:
- Buffer Landscape basics
- Native plants for Virginia
- Rain gardens
- AEP’s Do’s and Don’ts below the 800’ contour
- Preventing soil erosion
- Permeable hardscaping
- Creating wildlife habitat
Along with the seminars on these topics, there will also be professionals in landscaping and design present to answer your questions. Tours of the 4-H center’s buffer landscape gardens will be given by members of the Franklin County Master Gardeners, and you can even build your own bluebird house during the afternoon.
The Blue Ridge soil and water conservation district will demonstrate how you can build your own rain barrels and compost tubs.
Come and join us for an informative and fun afternoon!
Please register for this free public event by going to our registration site here.
