The Pigg River, named after 18th century land
owner John Pigg, curves through the Waid Recreation Area in Rocky Mount. Over
10 miles of trails can also be found in the park, many of them with views of
the river, especially in the colder months when trees have shed their leaves.
The Pigg River rises on Fivemile Mountain in
western Franklin County and flows eastward
through Franklin and Pittsylvania Counties, past the town
of Rocky Mount. It joins the Roanoke River
from the south (along a section of the Roanoke often known locally as the
Staunton River) as part of the Leesville Reservoir. From here it continues its
flow to the Atlantic Ocean via Albemarle
Sound.
These icicles may be here until April! |
A
chilly sight along the Pigg reminds me that there is different beauty available
to us in the cold. You will miss it if you don’t wrap up, lace up your boots
and strike out!
