Grassy Hill Natural Area Preserve includes a Virginia Bird
and Wildlife Trail which is part of BRFAL’s Adopt-a-Trail project. The DGIF
sponsored project requires that a small team hike the trail quarterly and
report fauna and trail conditions.
But team members also notice other things, including this
rock:
Grassy Hill Bolder |
According to DGIF, “…on
Grassy Hill shallow, basic, heavy-clay soils
predominate and outcrops of magnesium-rich bedrock are common.” http://www.dcr.virginia.gov/natural-heritage/natural-area-preserves/grassyhill
This perfectly sliced mafic bolder fascinated me! It was large enough that it took
two people to roll it over. How did it get here? How long has it been here? What
force was strong enough to slice it so neatly in half? How long will it stay?
Yes, we did roll it back
into place in the spirit of leave-no-trace. Ask any Adopt-a-Trail team member if you are interested in joining in an upcoming quarterly hike.
