According to Horn, et al. Wildflowers of
Tennessee, the Ohio Valley and the Southern Appalachians , “…the nectar of
many members of the Heath Family, including rhododendrons, contains poisonous
andromedotoxin. For this reason, beekeepers must be aware when locating their
hives in the spring. At various times, people have become ill from eating toxic
honey.”
