Eastern Tiger Swallowtail

This beauty was visiting Charlotte H's yard on a recent sunny day.

Eastern Tiger Swallowtail, Papilio glaucus, according to Wikipedia is a species of swallowtail butterfly native to eastern North America. It is one of the most familiar butterflies in the eastern United States, where it is common in many different habitats. It flies from spring to fall, during which it produces two to three broods.

Swallowtails live about two weeks, feeding on nectar as adults and as caterpillars on plants from the magnolia and rosaceae families. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Papilio_glaucus

This picture is a female, which come in both yellow and black forms and are distinguished by the string of blue spots along the hindwing. Beautiful but deadly: both the caterpillar and adult swallowtails are said to be poisonous!
