March 18, 2021 Chapter Meeting via Zoom: Updates and Continuing Ed

Nature never sleeps and neither do naturalists! There have been positive changes in the Virginia Master Naturalist volunteer management system during our down time. At our first Zoom meeting you will be updated on  the new system, "Better Impact."  In the meantime, watch for emails from VMN about upcoming training on this application and register to attend online training.  

Once you have participated in training and receive your login credentials, you will be able to start logging your project and continuing education hours. Be sure to keep your own record of your hours until then so that you can enter all your hours in the new system.

A thrilling bonus: Continuing education delivered by none other than Todd Fredericksen! Todd is a long-term friend of the BRFAL chapter and teaches biology and environmental science at Ferrum College and Virginia Tech. He is also the editor of Banisteria, the journal of the Virginia Natural History Society.

The Mesopredators Among Us

In the absence of apex predators, such as wolves and mountain lions, smaller-bodied “mesopredators” including raccoons, foxes, opossums, weasels, and skunks have benefitted.  Then, there is the arrival of the coyote!  In addition, humans have modified the ecological landscape to further the advantage of mesopredators, and they have learned to live among us.  The release of these critters has raised some ecological havoc, as well as posing more direct threats to humans.  Should we learn to like them, just live with them, or should somebody do something about them?
