Bald Knob Invasive Plant Removal

Shout out to Posie, Geoff, Beth, and Paul who helped Jimmy Francis with DCR to rid a stretch of East Court Street in Rocky Mount of invasive plants to allow for growth of native flora. The team also collected plenty of trash along the road!

The crew used lopers and electric trimmers to remove Chinese Privet, Ailanthus, Multiflora Rose, and various other non-native plant life.  Jimmy followed the cutters with glyphosate painting of the stumps.  The larger trees will await a chain saw in the near future.  Sadly, native plants like Coral bush were unfortunately few.

The plan is for Eastern Red Cedars, Black Cherries, and Walnuts to inhabit the entire stretch of land along the street after the invaders have been vanquished.  The project ran from 10 to 1:30pm, and three hours was plenty of work in the 80 degree heat of early March.

If you missed this opportunity, more will be coming your way as we work with DCR to make the 150 acres of Bald Knob NAP a more natural setting for wildlife and the unusual mafic barrens denizen, the fame flower.
