Bald Knob Stewardship November 12, 2021

On a beautiful 65 degree November day, four BRFAL members, Beth P, Paul P, Rick W, and Glenn S, helped two Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) techs remove wire fencing from a field adjacent to the Bald Knob Natural Area Preserve (BKNAP). The Preserve contains an unusual type of exposed rock that is home to the critically endangered fame flower. DCR has recently obtained a field adjacent to the original 79 acres that includes the Knob. Find out more details about this unique habitat at https://www.dcr.virginia.gov/natural-heritage/natural-area-preserves/baldknob

Looks like a big job!

In past years, BRFAL members have helped with stream clean-up, removal of barbed wire fencing, and containment of invasive Chinese privet bushes.  In this month’s effort, we managed to remove about 150 yards of fencing using bolt cutters for the wire and loppers and chain saws for the trees, bushes, and vines that were intertwined in the wire fencing.  The fencing was carted away by the DCR staff.

As always, there is much more work to do in the future!  Removing and installing fencing will be done this fall and winter.  Installing and repairing some fencing is necessary to “fence out” neighboring cattle.  Paul P. will let folks know as opportunities to help present themselves.

Thanks to Paul P. for photos and project report!
