DWR Fish Habitat Project at SML

On October 20 and 25, BRFAL members Posie M, Brian Mc C and Paul P participated in a years’ long Department of Wildlife Resources (DWR) project to increase Smith Mountain Lake’s fish population. Multiple teams placed more than 80 artificial fish habitats around the shoreline.

The purpose of the structures is to offer young fish shelter from predators, contributing to their survival. The photo from 10/25/2021 shows a completed habitat structure ready to be fitted with 4 concrete blocks on the legs and then deployed. Funding for the project is provided by Appalachian Power.
