Picture of the Day: Wade Park Rock

Wade Recreation Area-Calico Rock Trail

I am not certain that this is "the" Calico Rock from which the trail earns its name, but it is beautiful indeed! This large outcropping occurs early in the trail, overlooking the Pigg River and sports fields. What makes this beautiful to me? I admire that it is made of the very bones of the Appalachian Mountains, ancient and worn yet enduring. It is also teems with life! It hosts mosses, lichens, plants, insects, and creatures scaly, smooth and furry.

Then there are the repeating patterns in the rock itself that so please the eye. These patterns are referred to as fractals, and they may be part of why exposure to nature reduces our stress.

Franklin County is fortunate to have such a well developed and maintained recreation area. Over 10 miles of trails await you, well developed and close to home. Check it out!
